flame-tree-shawl-by-padma-r
Flame Tree Shawl by Padma R

The inspiration for this crescent shawl comes from the flame tree (Gulmohar) which is a much-loved sight in India. In summer, it is covered with flamboyant bright red flowers. But to me, the tree is just as beautiful when it is not in flower, with the curving shapes of its delicate leaves.

Vertically flowing leaf shapes form the body of the shawl. The border was designed to have a geometric element for contrast, as well as a graceful, stylized leaf shape to maintain a visual continuum with the body. I used silverline seed beads to accentuate the elegant lines of the border.

The shawl is worked top down in 2 lace patterns which flow into each other. A narrow center panel with a small leaf motif adds visual interest. The beads are added with a crochet hook or with needle and thread; they add to sparkle and drape. However, they are optional.

Skill Level

Intermediate

Yarn

Cascade Yarns® Aegean Tweed 100% Organic Wool; 100 g (3.5 oz)/328 yds (300 m)

2 skeins color #13 (Blackberry)

Needles & notions

US 8 (5 mm) Knitting Needles or size to obtain gauge

Yarn Needle

Minimum of 6 stitch markers

For beading: 400 size 6/0 (3.5 mm) seed beads, sewing thread (for needle and thread method) or 0.7 mm crochet hook (for crochet hook method)

Waste yarn for provisional CO and lifelines

US H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook for BO (optional)

Finished Measurements

76” along upper edge, 22” deep at center, 106” along lower edge, after blocking

Gauge

17 sts x 24 rows = 4” (10 cm), in Stockinette stitch, before blocking

14 sts x 20 rows = 4” (10 cm), in Stockinette stitch, after blocking

Errata

There are a few minor corrections to the final rows of the Border.
